Buckley, S.J., Cornelius

Cornelius Buckley, S.J., ’50 celebrated his golden jubilee of priesthood in March, when, to honor his life of service, his family and friends established a scholarship fund in his name at Thomas Aquinas College for financially challenged students. There, he is the head chaplain and assistant dean for religious affairs. Buckley has spent much of his academic career in Jesuit institutions—earning multiple degrees, teaching, and serving in administrative positions. His publications include the book When Jesuits Were Giants, Your Word, O Lord … Meditations for College Students and Anyone Else, and a translation of Simon Decloux’s The Ignatian Way. Helfrich, Frank

Frank Helfrich ’51 received a commendation in May from the Menlo Park Historical Association for 30 years of volunteer service. The  83-year-old historian and Menlo Park native helped to shepherd the nonprofit organziation almost from day one, archiving the town’s memories, which he still does. Norman Slaught '52 and Claire celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last July at one of their favorite spots: the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. They have eight children and 27 grandchildren, including granddaughter Diane Slaught '11.

Fr. Ed McMahon '52 writes that in his 80th year he has finished a 12 year research project with small groups called "Rediscovering the Lost Body-Connection Within Christian Spirituality."  It will be published shortly as a workbook with practical body-learnings and exercises that can transform a Christian's awareness of who Christ is today and who each of us is "in Christ."

Marcel Fiore M.A. '66 retired from 17 years of high school teaching and administration. He coached wrestling, football, and baseball at Santa Clara High School and baseball at Wilcox High School. He is happily married to wife Bev of 54 years. They have four children, including David Fiore '79, and five grandsons.

Joseph B. Edden '52 writes, "Entered the Society of Jesus in 1949 and taught at Canisius High School in Buffalo and Xavier High School in New York. Received a dispensation from Pope Paul in 1973. Married for 42 years in December. Worked 11 years in photography. Taught Latin for seven years in public schools in New York and nine years of Latin and photography at Father Lopez High School in Daytona, Florida. Retired 1972."

Edden, Joseph

Joseph B. Edden ’52 writes, “Loved my year at SCU, 1948–49. Since then, I was a Jesuit in the East for 24 years and then was given a dispensation from Pope Paul VI.” After his dispensation, Edden worked in graphic design for 11 years, taught Latin in New York state public schools, and moved to Florida to teach Latin theology. He now lives in Florida with his wife of 43 years and his son, Michael.

Leigh Josephson ’52 is living his golden years on the island of Kauai, after teaching for many years at Iolani School in Honolulu. He has been married for over 60 years and raised his children in Honolulu as well. After being inducted into the Hawaiian Aquatic Hall of Fame, he is looking forward to competing in an annual open water swim in Hanalei Bay.

Leslie R. Webber '53 writes that he retired in 1995 as a Chicago ER Doctor. His wife of 50 years, Clarine, died in January 2009. But he found new wife on E-Harmony, and moved in with her in Nashville two years ago. Webber authored the book An American Doctor's Life, Divinely Orchestrated, which gives life at Santa Clara in the ’50s in great detail; it can be found in the SCU library and on He also plans on attending the Grand Reunion in October.
