Sifferman, Stephen

Stephen Sifferman '93, M.S. '98 received the School of Engineering's 2015 Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award, which honors alumni whose accomplishments in their professions, communities, and/or service to the School of Engineering have set them apart. Sifferman reflects the qualities and characteristics that best define the ideals of a Jesuit education: a passion for and commitment to excellence.

For the past 20 years, Steve Sifferman has had a distinguished career in the wireless communications industry.  Beginning as a senior software engineer at Northrop Grumman, he moved on to ArrayComm, where he worked his way up the ranks to eventually taking on the role of President of the world leader in multi-antenna signal processing software products for wireless communications. During his time with ArrayComm, he helped develop cutting-edge technologies and holds numerous patents in recognition of his work.  Respected not only for his technical ability, Steve is also lauded for his managerial and leadership abilities. In his current capacity as president and CEO of Tarana Wireless, Inc., Steve is guiding the company’s evolution from its successful first phase of technology development into broad commercialization and growth. Beyond serving his company, he impacts his field as a board member of the Telecommunications Industry Association. For his contribution to the development of wireless communication technologies and outstanding leadership within his industry, Steve was selected to receive this honor.

He continues to live in Santa Clara with his wife, Leslie Anne (Rettig) Sifferman '93, and their three children: Greg, Stephanie, and Nick.

Rubin, Kathleen

Kathleen Rubin '98 has recently directed a one man show, written and performed by Aaron Braxton, called "Did You Do Your Homework?" It has been playing at the Beverly Hills Playhouse in Los Angeles since January and continues to run due to overwhelming success. The show chronicles Mr. Braxton's experience as a substitute teacher in an urban school in Los Angeles. The theme is timely and relevant as Mr. Braxton states, "Education is an equalizer and a conditioned mind will defeat an angry heart."

Aruna Ravichandran ’98, M.S. ’08 is vice president of global marketing and strategy at CA Technologies. She has more than 20 years of experience building and marketing products in various DevOps markets spanning all walks of the software development life cycle. Starting her career as an engineer at Hewlett Packard 22 years ago, Ravichandran has since worked to promote DevOps best practices and help organizations address key challenges facing DevOps, such as cultural changes and metrics needed for success. Prior to CA Technologies, she worked at Juniper Networks, where she held executive leadership roles in marketing and engineering.  She frequently blogs for SYS-CON Media, Wired Insights, Tech Target, Information Week, DevOpsDigest.com, DevOps.com, and Cloud Tweaks. She has presented at Gartner Symposium 2016, Gartner ITOM 2014, Gartner Data Center 2014, DevOps Summit 2014, Cloud Expo 2014, CA World 2014, 2015, and HP Discover (2008–2012). Ravichandran is the author of several articles and publications as well as the book DevOps for Digital Leaders. In 2016, she was named one of the top 100 most influential women in Silicon Valley by Silicon Valley Business Journal and received the 2016 Most Powerful and Influential Woman Award by the National Diversity Council.

Lloyd Pierce ’98 was hired as an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors basketball team. Pierce joins the Warriors after spending the previous three seasons as the player development coordinator for the Cavaliers, where he worked closely with the team’s players on individual skill development. A Bay Area native from San Jose, Pierce attended Santa Clara University from 1994-1998, where he was a four-year letterman and helped lead the Broncos to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. Following his college career, Pierce played professionally in Mexico, Australia, and Germany before returning to Santa Clara to join the team’s coaching staff under Dick Davey.

Lloyd Pierce '98 is now a player development coach for the Memphis Grizzlies. Mr. Pierce, with more than 15 years of collegiate and professional basketball experience, joins the Grizzlies’ organization for a third NBA coaching job after a year (2010-11) with the Golden State Warriors, where he served as an assistant coach under head coach Keith Smart. Prior to his stint with the Warriors, he worked for the Cleveland Cavaliers as a player development coordinator for three seasons (2007-10). The San Jose, Calif., native attended SCU (1994-98) where he helped lead the Broncos to two NCAA Tournament berths. After graduating with a degree in business management, he played four seasons internationally, making stops in Mexico, Australia, and Germany before returning to SCU, where he joined the team’s staff as an assistant coach under head coach Dick Davey (2003-07).

On July 7, 2012, Steve O'Brien '98 wed Julianne (Visbal) O'Brien '04 in the Santa Clara Mission Church with over 40 fellow Broncos in attendance. It was truly a great day to be a Bronco! Today, the couple resides in Annapolis, MD, where Julianne works as a civil engineer with Bay Engineering, and Steve serves as the Naval Academy Athletic Association's Associate Athletic Director-Development at the United States Naval Academy. The O'Briens enjoy regularly returning to the Mission Campus for a variety of SCU events and are looking forward to making their next trip back this October for Steve's 15-year reunion.

Steve O’Brien ’98 has been named deputy director of athletics at San Jose State University. Prior to SJSU, O’Brien worked with the athletics departments at the Naval Academy, UCSB, and SCU. A former member of the SCU men’s cross-country program, O’Brien earned a B.A. with honors as a history and economics double major. He also earned a law degree from the University of Southern California and worked as a finance and real estate attorney. While working at SCU, he provided academic support and compliance assistance for student-athletes before serving as executive director of the Bronco Bench Foundation.

Prior to joining SITO Mobile, Michele was the director of acquisitions for RPX Corporation where she oversaw the assessment, valuation, acquisition and licensing of patents against clients. Prior to RPX Corporation Ms. Moreland worked as a Partner at McDermott Will & Emery and as an Associate at Cooley Godward LLP focused solely on patent litigation.

Meredith McKenzie J.D. ’98 was appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown ’59 to the Dental Board of California. McKenzie has been vice president and deputy general counsel at Juniper Networks since 2012. She was senior director of intellectual property at Symantec Corporation from 2006 to 2012, director of litigation, licensing and IP for Cypress Semiconductor from 2001 to 2006 and corporate counsel and director of IP at Enuvis Inc. from 2000 to 2001. McKenzie was an associate for Howrey LLP from 1998 to 2000 and patent agent and design engineer at Intel Corporation from 1993 to 1998.
