She joins big brother Ryan, age 4. the family lives in Los Gatos, and Francine is working hard at home with the kids after teaching elementary school for 16 years. Dan is a Wealth Management Advisor in San Jose with Northwestern Mutual.

Linda Lorenat ’94, J.D. ’98 is a partner with King & Spalding in the Silicon Valley office. She came from Latham & Watkins, where she worked in the firm’s emerging companies practice. Ms. Lorenat represents start-up and emerging companies on a variety of corporate matters as well as venture capital firms in their investments in start-up and early-stage companies. She also represents major corporations in connection with mergers and acquisitions.

Lopez, Juan

Local attorney Juan Lopez J.D. '94 was named as one of nine recipients of the 2016 California Peace Award for the 30th Assembly District. 

Lopez, a Morgan Hill resident who was born in Arizona and raised in Los Angeles, founded We the People in 2014, an organization that defends the civil rights of Morgan Hill residents and promotes multicultural events in the community.

“It is my honor to recognize these truly remarkable individuals and organizations who have made it their mission to promote peace throughout all of our communities,” Assemblymember Luis Alejo (D-Salinas) said. “The commitment and dedication they have demonstrated for their communities exemplify what this award is all about. It’s everyday heroes like these who help keep our neighborhoods safe.”

Lopez, who owns a bachelor’s degree in Chicano Studies from U.C. Berkeley and a law degree from Santa Clara University, served as director of the Latino Student Rights Project from 1994-95 and also worked at the Family Violence Law Center, the first male attorney hired there. He has worked in the Santa Clara County Public Defender’s Office since 1996, defending indigent clients. Lopez has been a board member of the Community Agency for Resources and Services since 2015.

He is joined as one of two Santa Clara County honorees by Gilroy native Sally Duran Armendariz, a statewide president of the Young Christian Workers and founding board member of the La Isla Pacifica Shelter for women and children.

Lathrop, Rob

Rob Lathrop '94, M.S. '01 is the new president of Lathrop Engineering, a Paramit company, that designs and develops medical device and life science instrumentation. As the former VP of engineering at Lathrop, Rob brings more than 20 years of experience in leading multidisciplinary teams, project management, and designing and developing complex scientific instrumentation. He has been instrumental in expanding the company's client base, and his optimization of the product development process now enables Lathrop to complete even the most complex projects on timelines no one else can match. Rob's leadership of design and engineering teams through many successful projects over the years has built strong working relationships with clients, as well as their continued repeat business.

Rob has served on the University's Mechanical Engineering Industry Advisory Board for the last 10 years. Finding it important to give back to young engineers coming up in the ranks, he also contributes his time, mentoring, and training as part of his activities on the board.

President Obama's Second Inauguration 2013

After serving as a intern during law school, John Kennedy J.D. ’94 has continued to work in the San Francisco City Attorney's Office for the past 20 years. The office provides legal services to all City departments and agencies as well as elected and appointed officials, and his practice reflects the public policy and political issues facing the City including public transportation, the growth of technology apps, and same-sex marriage/Proposition 8 litigation. John has served on several LGBT non-profit Boards of Directors including the San Francisco LGBT Community Center, LYRIC, and Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom. Since he will be marrying his long time partner - Scott Shafer - Labor Day weekend, John regrets that he'll be missing the reunion due to their planned honeymoon in Portugal and Spain but sends his regards to his fellow classmates. His interests include travel, water polo, and food.

Jacklyn A. (Smith) Karceski MBA ’94, global general manager for GreenPoint Global, was the keynote speaker in March for NYCwomen.connect, an intimate forum and networking series designed to showcase female entrepreneurs from an array of industries before an audience of 100 to 150 male and female investors, business leaders, and other service professionals committed to promoting and supporting women in business. Karceski has more than 20 years of financial and operational management experience with successful technology start-ups, large financial organizations, and three big consulting firms. Prior to joining GreenPoint, Karceski was a principal of 1020 Partners, a service consulting and investment firm targeting high-tech start-ups and early stage capital formation. Karceski is a CPA and, in addition to holding an MBA from Santa Clara, is a graduate of the International Economics and Public Policy Program of Harvard University, and she holds a BA in economics from the University of California, Berkeley.

Rian Jorgensen J.D. ’94 joined Ahern Insurance Brokerage, one of the largest independently owned brokerages specializing in the insurance needs of law firms, as senior VP and counsel. Jorgensen will be located in Ahern’s San Francisco office.

Drawing upon his 25 years of experience in claims advocacy, risk management, and the practice of law, Jorgensen will be responsible for launching Ahern’s In House Risk Management Program and Services.

Jorgensen comes to Ahern from Marsh Risk and Insurance Services, where he was senior VP in the Financial and Professional Liability Practice Group.

He began his career in insurance with J.H. Minet, the Lloyd’s brokerage that pioneered lawyer’s professional liability insurance. He holds a bachelor of arts degree in economics from Texas A&M University and earned his juris doctor degree from Santa Clara University.

Jorgensen resides in Menlo Park with his family. His professional affiliations include the American Bar Association, Bar Association of San Francisco, and the Professional Liability Underwriting Society.

Jerry Brown '59. Hite, 46, of San Francisco, has served as a deputy public defender at the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office since 1998. He was a sole practitioner at the Law Offices of Christopher C. Hite from 1996 to 1998 and a legal consultant for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, San Francisco Branch from 1996 to 1997. He earned a Master of Arts degree from Golden Gate University, a Juris Doctor degree from the Santa Clara University School of Law and a Bachelor of Science degree from Santa Clara University.

Higgins, Robert

Robert James Higgins ’80, J.D. ’94, a former deputy county attorney, has been appointed to the Navajo County Superior Court. The appointment was announced by Gov. Jan Brewer. It fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Carolyn C. Holliday.

“Robert touts a level of professional experience outside of law that is rare among judicial candidates,” said Governor Jan Brewer. “In addition to a strong legal background, he was a teacher for many years and is a philanthropist in his community. He is well-rounded and well-equipped to serve the Court and the community.”

Higgins has practiced civil and criminal law in Navajo County for 17 years. He has an extensive legal background, including experience in criminal law, transactional matters, and civil litigation. He also has a broad range of expertise in estate planning and contractual issues, child dependency cases, personal injury matters, and forcible detainer actions.

Higgins completed his undergraduate degree from Santa Clara University in 1980 and received a master's degree from Arizona State University in 1988. He graduated from Santa Clara University Law School in 1994. He was admitted to practice in 1994 and admitted to the bar the same year. Higgins was an English teacher at Brophy College Preparatory for seven years prior to attending law school.

“He has been active in education efforts in his community,” says gubernatorial spokesperson Ann Dockendorff, “as he founded St. Anthony School in 1997 and continues to serve as a Board member. Additionally, Mr. Higgins is a volunteer with the White Mountain Tuition Support Foundation, for which he currently serves as President. He also has volunteered with St. Francis Parish on the White Mountain Apache Reservation, and has worked on several pro bono cases for White Mountain Apaches.”
