While I appreciate your including Are People Getting Crazier? in your Spring 2007 issue, it is an academic discussion of mental illness. The responsibility of SCU (and all institutions of higher education) to get involved is vague at best.

As a Development Officer at Cal State Hayward (now Cal State University, East Bay) I conceived of and secured funding for their Institute for Mental Health and Wellness Education in 2000. As the current Mental Health Services Act (Prop 63) Policy Coordinator for NAMI California (The National Alliance on Mental Illness,) I work with large groups to, among other things, revamp mental health education and mental health workforce development. Regional collaboratives between higher education and the mental health system are being developed throughout the State. The Bay Area Regional Collaborative has been in existence for about 7 years and is the leading model. SCU should become involved.

As student suicides are increasing on college campuses everywhere, Id like to see an article about what SCU is doing to help its students who are struggling with mental health issues. College age is often the first time that these issues present themselves. Sometimes with dramatic and tragic consequences.
