World Champ

Philosophy professor earns spot among the giants of her profession.

Philosophy professor Shannon Vallor has joined the ranks of Craig Newmark (Craigslist) and Creative Commons founder and net neutrality maven Lawrence Lessig.

They have all won World Technology Awards from the World Technology Network.

Honorees are judged by peers working in the same field of expertise. Vallor won for her work in technology ethics and became the 11th person to win in the ethics category since 2000.

The awards are made in association with Time, NASDAQ, Fortune, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Science, the New York Academy of Sciences, and MIT Technology Review.

Vallor’s research interests include how the human character is being transformed by rapid advances in robotics, new social media, surveillance, and biomedical technologies. She has a book forthcoming from Oxford University Press, 21st Century Virtue: Technology and the Future of Human Flourishing.

The 2015 World Technology Summit & Awards Ceremony took place last November at the Time & Life Building in New York City.
