Five years ago, the World Economic Forum anticipated that artificial intelligence would have by now displaced 85 million jobs but created 97 million new ones. Though it’s unclear whether that prediction has come true, some Santa Clara students are hoping to be part of the potential millions of new hires in the field of AI.

Over spring break, 24 students participated in the new Bay Area AI Immersion, organized by the SCU Career Center and fully funded by a grant from the Board of Regents’ Experiential Learning Initiative. Participants deepen their understanding of the emerging tech of AI through company visits and networking events.

Companies include Google, Adobe, HP, Wells Fargo, Genentech, Nutanix, Okta, and Handshake.

“Company representatives will be discussing how their departments are using AI and emerging technologies and how they plan to incorporate it in the future,” says Colleen Withers, director of career development and campus integration. This is all part of SCU’s Impact 2030 initiative to prepare “students to confidently and ethically use emergent technologies like AI.”
