Machaela Makes Four

With Machaela George ’20 signing a contract this summer, there are now four Broncos who’ve gone pro with the OL Reign of the National Women’s Soccer League.

Two more Broncos are headed north to go pro. Kelcie Hedge ’19 and Machaela George ’20 have both signed contracts with the OL Reign of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).

Midfielder Hedge was selected as a redshirt senior in January during the first round of the 2020 NWSL Draft with the ninth overall pick. Then in June, defender George joined her by signing with the Tacoma, Washington-based team. They join former Broncos Sofia Huerta ’15 and Dani Weatherholt ’16 with the Reign.

George—who, in her final season, set career highs with three goals and five assists—says her four years of playing at the highest level collegiately equipped her with the tools necessary to compete at a professional level. “My experience with Santa Clara Women’s Soccer and the coaching staff prepared me for playing in the NWSL, because of the consistent high intensity of practices and games,” says George. “The unconditional support from my coaches and teammates gave me the confidence to strive to be my best.”
