First Call the Game

Aly Wagner ’02 makes headlines as the first woman to call a men’s World Cup Match on U.S. television.

It seems everyone was talking about Aly Wagner ’02 this summer. Vogue, USA Today, and an endless array of soccer blogs were all taken with Wagner’s performance as the first woman to call a men’s World Cup match on U.S. television. With her on-air partner, Derek Rae, Wagner’s work earned plaudits for adding nuance to the airwaves. Iran’s 1–0 win over Morocco on FOX Sports provided the backdrop for Wagner’s historic first call. She’s not new to setting records: Wagner scored SCU’s winning goal in the 2001 NCAA championship over North Carolina and played in more than 130 games for the U.S. national team.
