UGRD Engineering '85
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Major General Michael C. Wehr '85 has been selected for the School of Engineering's highest honor, the Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award, recognizing alumni whose accomplishments in their professions, communities, and University service have set them apart.
As a civil engineering student, Wehr was commissioned as a second lieutenant though ROTC at SCU in 1985, followed by marrying his college sweetheart, Deborah D. Kalisz ’84, in 1986. He later obtained his master’s degree from the University of Texas and graduation from the Command and General Staff College and the Joint Forces Staff College. He served as a Military Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Highly decorated during his four combat tours (Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, and others), engineering highlights include command of the 307th Engineer Battalion in Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Theater Engineer for Afghanistan. Following his command of the South Pacific Division in San Francisco, California, he is currently in command of the Mississippi Valley Division in Vicksburg, Mississippi, where he is responsible for a $2 billion civil works program impacting 41% of the United States and including 1.25 million square miles, 31 states, and 2 Canadian provinces. Mike and Deb are blessed with two terrific children, Rachel (24) and Chuck (21).

The Silicon Valley Business Journal named Mike Blach '85, president and CEO of Blach Construction, one of its first ‘Power Executives.’ The journal cited Blach’s successful leadership of the company, as well as his commitment to many community nonprofits, as reasons for his inclusion on its inaugural list of Silicon Valley’s most influential business leaders.
Blach, 53, is in excellent company. The list included Silicon Valley titans such as Tim Cook of Apple, Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg of Facebook, Sergey Brin and Larry Page of Google and Elon Musk of Tesla.
Blach has led the San Jose-based general contracting firm Blach Construction for nearly three decades. Under his leadership, the company has thrived, builds several landmark projects every year and continues to be recognized with top state and national awards in safety, innovation, project execution and corporate philanthropy. Moreover, the Business Journal also has just named Blach Construction as one of the Best Places to Work for the eighth year in a row.
