Peters, Alison

Alison Peters '95 works at EnviroIssues, a Seattle-based agency dedicated to developing and executing comprehensive public involvement, strategic communications, and outreach plans and programs by tackling some of the thorniest public policy and environmental issues of our day. 

For the past 20 years, Alison has been designing voter and community surveys on a wide range of topics, moderating focus groups around the state, interviewing stakeholders and implementing online surveys with hard-to-reach populations.  She spends her free time serving on the board of the Northwest Literacy Foundation, planning road trips and cheering on her two sons, Ryan and Charlie.

Klees, Jill

Jill Klees M.A. '95 gives tips on overhauling a résumé in her recent Illuminate article "Take Your Résumé from Retro to Wow." Jill is the director of Law Student Life and the former assistant director of Alumni Career Counseling at Santa Clara University.

She has worked in the career coaching field for more thanr 15 years in both academic and corporate environments. She gained extensive experience working in start-up, non-profit and technology-based industries providing career related resources within the Silicon Valley marketplace. She has extensive programming experience in developing innovative tools and resources to prepare her clients for the workforce and is highly skilled in helping her clients determine their unique talents and strengths.

Aslan, Reza

Reza Aslan '95, professor of creative writing at the University of California, Riverside and best-selling author, has been named the recipient of the James Joyce Award and an Honorary Fellowship of the Literary & Historical Society, Europe’s largest university society. 

The James Joyce Award is given to those who have excelled in a field of human endeavor and have made a profound impact on the world around them. Recipients in recent years have included Salman Rushdie, Alan Rickman, Desmond Tutu and Noam Chomsky. 

Aslan is an internationally renowned author and scholar of religions. His books include the New York Times bestseller Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth and international bestseller No god but God: The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam. His writing has been published in The New York Times, The Christian Science Monitor, and The Washington Post, and he appears frequently on TV and radio shows as a religion and political analyst. He also is the host and executive producer of Ovation’s Rough Draft with Reza Aslan, and CNN’s upcoming documentary series, Believer.

Winn, Randy

Randy Winn '96 has been inducted into the Santa Clara University Athletics Hall of Fame. Winn was a two-sport standout at Santa Clara, but made his mark professionally in baseball. As an outfielder he helped guide the Broncos to the 1994 NCAA Tournament with a 40-20 overall record, including a first-place showing in the West Coast Conference. As a senior the following year, he earned All-WCC honors while batting .294 with 30 steals, a mark that still ranks third on the school's single-season list. Before concentrating on baseball, Winn was a two-year member of the Santa Clara basketball team, including the 1992-93 squad which upset No. 2 seed Arizona in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

A native of Danville, California, Winn was selected in the third round of the 1995 MLB Draft by the Florida Marlins and enjoyed a 13-year professional career. He made his major league debut in 1998 with Tampa Bay and earned the team's MVP award in 2002 after batting .298 with 14 home runs, 39 doubles, nine triples and 27 steals. That same season he represented the team in the MLB All-Star game. A switch-hitter, Winn went on to play with Seattle (2003-05), San Francisco (2006-09), the New York Yankees (2010) and St. Louis (2010), hitting .284 with 110 home runs and 662 RBIs in his career. He was inducted into the WCC Hall of Honor in March and works for the San Francisco Giants while serving as an analyst for CSN Bay Area.

Panetta, Jimmy

Jimmy Panetta J.D. '96 is a candidate for the 20th Congressional District, located on the California Central Coast. The district includes Monterey and San Benito Counties, and portions of Santa Cruz and Santa Clara Counties. 

Panetta lives in his hometown of Carmel Valley. After attending local public schools, Panetta graduated from Monterey Peninsula College, U.C. Davis, and Santa Clara University School of Law.

Panetta works as a prosecutor at the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office. Prior to that, he worked as a prosecutor in Oakland, California. He also is involved in a number of community activities concerning Veterans, at-risk youth, local colleges, and the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary.

Panetta served in the United States Navy Reserve as an Intelligence Officer for eight years. During that time, Lieutenant Panetta was mobilized and deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Based on his work for a Special Forces task force, he was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service.

Panetta serves on the Board of Directors for the Monterey County Veterans Transition Center, the Central Coast Veterans Cemetery Foundation, Rancho Cielo Youth Campus, the Community Foundation of Monterey County, the National Steinbeck Center, and on the Advisory Council for the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. He also serves as a trustee on the University of California at Santa Cruz Foundation and chairs the Monterey Peninsula College Citizens Bond Oversight Committee.

Jimmy is a graduate of Santa Cruz County’s 26th Focus-Agriculture class and is an associate member of the Monterey and Santa Cruz County Farm Bureaus. In addition to being a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, Jimmy was honored as a 2015 Veteran of the Year for Monterey County. His father is Leon Panetta ’60, J.D. ’63.

Guerrero Wildanger, Veronica

The Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley has awarded the Jose Luis and Ofelia Guerrero family with its La Familia Award for deep-rooted commitment and involvement in the community.  Among the family members honored were Martha Guerrero Soto '85, Veronica Guerrero Wildanger '88, MBA '96, and Ignacio J. Guerrero '95. Martha is principal at  Mount Pleasant High School, Veronica homeschools and volunteers in the arts, and Ignacio is director of Child Support Services for the County of Santa Clara. Other siblings honored included Jose Luis, retired battalion chief for the city of San Jose, and Juan Carlos, reporter for ABC News.

She also was recently awarded a prestigious Stevie Award for Female Executive of the Year, as well as the Marketing Executive of the Year award from the highly competitive Best in Biz awards. Michelle and her husband, Sean Creane, their son, Niko (age 9), daughter, Nadia (age 4), and their cat, Hooligan, split their time between the mountains of Oregon and the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area.

Jeff Cleveland '97 has joined the growing investment banking team of D.A. Davidson & Co as managing director in its Consumer and Retail sector. Cleveland works out of the Seattle office, where he leads the firm’s food, beverage and agriculture practice, in addition to his responsibilities in the broader consumer industry.

Cleveland has more than a decade of leadership experience in the food and beverage and consumer investment banking market, previously as a founding member of Harris Williams & Co.’s Minneapolis office along with its global food and beverage and consumer investment banking practices. Recently, Cleveland established the food, beverage, and agriculture practice for a Seattle, WA boutique investment bank. Cleveland earlier worked in Piper Jaffray & Co.’s investment banking group.
