During college, William McCarthy ’63 began dating his future wife, Ginny, a Dominican College student. They married in 1963, welcoming daughter Elizabeth Watley ’86 the following year, and soon after, twin sons Patrick ’88 and Robert McCarthy. In 1968, Bill became a registered civil engineer, a title he proudly held for 57 years. He later co-founded SMF Corporation and founded McCarthy Construction, leaving a legacy of notable projects and mentoring countless future leaders in the industry. Active on city and county construction boards, Bill was loved for his sharp wit, generous spirit, and fondness for Guinness and all things Irish. Bill died on June 17, 2025. He is survived by family, including grandson Jack McCarthy ’15.
