William Clark Godfrey ‘50 passed away on February 7, 2011, with his wife and children by his side. Godfrey was born on April 30, 1926, Los Angeles, Calif., son of Darwin Foote Godfrey and Dorothy Clark Godfrey. He is survived by Alice Irvine Godfrey, his loving wife and partner for 58 years, as well as their children and spouses Peter (Sharyn), Stephen (Kathy), MaryAlice Godfrey (David Dick), Sally Shea (Dan), Joan Grubert (Duane) and Emily Bowring ’86 (Doug). He took great delight and pride in his grandchildren Zach and Samantha Godfrey, Elizabeth Warner, Jessica and Nick Godfrey, Alex, Madeleine, Rosalind and MaryCharlotte Dick-Godfrey, William, MarySarah and Richel Shea, Emily and Olivia Grubert, Boyd, Peter, Amanda, Clark and Webber Bowring, and his great-grandson Jackson Warner. He was predeceased by his great-granddaughter Taylor Grace Warner. Known lovingly to his family and friends as WC, Bill grew up in San Francisco. A member of the Greatest Generation, he served in the United States Army Air Corps in Japan where he was baptized, confirmed and received first communion. He was a devout Catholic, and a man of principle, integrity and great generosity. Following his military service, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Santa Clara University and a Masters in Business Administration from Stanford University. He and Alice started their life together in the oil fields of Taft, Calif., and eventually settled in San Marino, Calif., where they raised their family and were active members of the parish community of Sts. Felicitas & Perpetua Catholic Church. Bill spent his business career at Getty Oil, achieving global success in international oil trading and marketing, chiefly in the Middle East and Japan. Bill and Alice were frequent guests at J. Paul Getty’s Sutton Place estate in the United Kingdom. His greatest joy was his life with Alice, his "Allswell", and his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Rest with God, Dad.
