Susan B. McCarthy J.D. ’76 was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Joseph and Lillian Hoffman. She attended Belmont High School and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Susan moved to California to attend SCU, where she obtained her law degree and met her husband, Joseph McCarthy J.D. ’70. Susan worked as a lawyer for legal aide, then stayed home for several years to raise her children. She completed her career working in the city of San Jose’s attorney’s office, retiring in 2012. Susan was an avid reader and loved movies, walks, and time with her family. She passed on Dec. 12, 2018. Her family will miss her keen sense of humor, her pragmatic advice, her warm smile, and her kind heart. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Joe, and her children, Elizabeth (David) Clegg and Michael McCarthy. Susan will also be fondly remembered by grandchildren Matthew and Sarah Clegg, brothers Arthur (Ilana) Hoffman and Morten (Edith Goldman) Hoffman, and brothers and sisters-in-law Deel McCarthy, Timothy (Cynthia Porter) McCarthy, Maureen (Patrick) Donohoe, Philip (Paula) McCarthy, Zoe Cordova McCarthy, whose husband Patrick preceded Susan in death, Rosemary (Eric Purviance) McCarthy, Mark McCarthy, Thomas (Maria Simeone-McCarthy) McCarthy, and Terence (Gina) McCarthy. Susan will also be forever remembered by her numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
