Steve Briscoe

Steve Briscoe ’82, a Bay Area fine arts artist, recently held a solo exhibit at the Transmission Gallery in Oakland. Briscoe’s work consists of sculptures made from recyclable or reused materials. While abstract his sculptures are familiar in the forms they take, from pullies to signboards. His most recent exhibit is a response towards the shifting political, social, and physical states of the present day.

“Built now on 40 years of trying different things, my sculpture is fabricated using the materials that are necessary,” Briscoe says. “I try not to use more than is necessary and I try to recycle and repurpose as much as I can. I often allow second-hand objects to make suggestions, but I will add or augment or connect them to complete the work. Some are gestures, some are statements of position, some are observations, but none are singular in meaning or message.”
