A longtime advocate for well-rounded student-athletes, Stephen O’Brien ’98 embraced the Jesuit philosophy of cura personalis. Born and raised in San Jose, Steve was a multi-sport athlete and member of the men’s cross-country team at Santa Clara, where he majored in history. After earning his law degree from USC, he embarked on a career path in college athletic administration. Working at multiple schools including SCU, Steve was director of athletics at Saint Martin’s University at the time of his death from ALS. Steve is survived by his father, William O’Brien ’70, and wife Julianne O’Brien ’04 and their two sons. Steve died on Aug. 5, 2024.
