Stephanie Wessels ’10 is serving in the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in New Orleans. She is based at UNITY, which coordinates community partnerships to end, prevent, and reduce homelessness. She also assists its member agencies to implement nationally-proven strategies to reduce homelessness, trains service providers, and performs programmatic monitoring and evaluation of its agencies’ programs. UNITY conducts homeless outreach on the streets and in abandoned buildings, rehabs apartment buildings into homes for those who are homeless or low-income, helps the public locate affordable housing, and advocates for public policy to prevent and reduce homelessness. Wessels acts as a housing case manager for the Sunrise HPRP Program; providing temporary placement services for homeless persons eligible for permanent supportive housing, utilizing Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-housing (HPRP) Funds. Afterwards, Wessels provides clients with case management services, including referrals for employment and medical services, life skills support and assisting the client accomplish other predetermined goals.
