A resident of Fort Madison, Iowa, Russell William Bates ’74 was born on Sept. 4, 1951, in Glendale, California, to William and Diane Robertson Bates. He worked in the information technology field followed by the recreational vehicle service industry until 2010. At SCU, he majored in computer science and mathematics. He played football in high school and college, was on the rowing team in college, and was a semi-professional dart player. He enjoyed sports, especially watching football on TV. His passion was working with stained glass. Russell passed away on Nov. 3, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. He is survived by his fiancé, Barbara Monson of Fort Madison; daughters Jennifer (Denis) Maranga of Seattle, Washington, and Danielle (Steve) German of Middle River, Maryland; grandchildren Katrina, Sydney, and Samantha; his mother, Diane Gill of California; brothers Frank (Terri) Gill of Texas and John Gill, Jr. of Arkansas; sisters Kathryn (Peter) Kastner of Arkansas, Jacquie (Randy) Alderson of California, Janice (Dennis) Horrell of Ohio, and Martha (Jared) Bangs of California; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. He was preceded in death by his father, William, stepfather, John, wife, Nancy, and a brother, Brian.
