Robert M. Cody ’53 worked summers in the orchards of Santa Clara Valley, at the American Can Company and the U.S. Post Office to support himself as he earned his biology degree at SCU. After his first year at Stanford University School of Medicine in 1954, he married Gretchen Schmitt. Bob began his private medical practice in 1962 at the San Mateo Medical Clinic, later running his solo cardiology practice until he retired in 1997. He took a sabbatical in the late 1960s to volunteer on a medical ship in Cartagena, Colombia. His medical career included being the assistant chief resident of medicine at Stanford University Hospitals and receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from the California Medical Association. After retiring, Bob took up saltwater fishing and studied topics ranging from opera to literature. Bob and Gretchen lived in Burlingame for more than 61 years, and shared six kids, 13 grandkids, including Daniel Cody ’18, and one great-grandchild. Robert died June 26, 2024.
