Patricia Scharpf M.A. ’95, M.A. ’97 was born and raised in South Bend, Indiana. Her parents, the late Amelia and Louis Barcza, raised her as a hardworking student, exceptional member of her community, and a dedicated Notre Dame Football fan. While in South Bend, she graduated from Saint Mary’s College with a B.S. in home economics and a minor in secondary education, then married her late husband, Ernest J. Scharpf Jr. The couple quickly moved to California and started a family. As a mother raising her children in Saratoga, Patricia loved to share her home with friends, hosting several events and inspiring friendships. She also spent many years working at ComputerLand, teaching etiquette classes through the city of Saratoga, and writing restaurant reviews for the Saratoga Times. During this time, Patricia also received two master’s degrees from SCU in pastoral studies and counseling psychology. In her later years, Patricia continued her passion for teaching as a home tutor to middle and high school students. She also continued her dedication to her community by creating a local “Grandparents Group.” This wonderful group continues to meet once a month at various locations to share stories, friendship, and support. While Patricia achieved many successes in life, she was by far most proud of the family she created. Patricia was a loving and active mother, grandmother, sister, and daughter. While her presence in our lives will be greatly missed, her legacy of love, service, and hard work will live forever with her family, friends, and all those who knew her. Patricia passed away on Nov. 30, 2016, with her family by her side. A 42-year resident of Saratoga, she is survived by her daughter, Maria Scharpf, son and daughter-in-law Jason & Tracy Scharpf, grandchildren Amelia and Max Scharpf, and sister Elaine Rowan.
