Nancy F. Schwalen ’70 taught in the Eastside Union High School District for 40 years, starting at James Lick High School in the Fall of 1970 as a teacher-intern. She completed her credential studies in the summer of 1971. In 1976 she moved to Santa Teresa High School where she taught for the rest of her career. She taught almost every level of high school English, from English Language Development (ESL) to AP English Literature. In addition to classroom teaching, she served as a new teacher mentor, an ELD chairperson, and a staff development coordinator. Additionally she worked on accreditation teams for the Accrediting Commission for Schools – Western Association of Schools and Colleges, a task she has continued after her retirement in 2010. She married Stephen in 1971 and they reared three children, Chris, Andy, and Beth. She and Steve now enjoy the energy and antics of 4 grandchildren. She and Steve are also active in their parish, particularly in RCIA and liturgy.
