Mike Gurley ’78 was born November 10, 1956, a few minutes ahead of his twin brother, Steve. He grew up in the East San Jose foothills and was involved in 4H, remaining friends with some members for all his life. Mike graduated from James Lick High School and was among the 5% of his graduating class to attend college. Mike entered Santa Clara in 1974, majored in political science, was a member of the ROTC, and rowed for the Santa Clara varsity crew team all four years. He rowed the bow position and became known as “Bowman Gurley” to crew mates, who he remained friends with for 47 years.
Upon graduation, Mike became an officer in the United States Navy. He served his country for 22 years, was a combat veteran, and retired as a commander. In 1987, Mike married his sweetheart and lifelong friend, Suzanne (Potter) Gurley, a teacher. Together they raised two young men, Christopher and Cameron. Upon retirement, Mike worked for AT&T as a consultant with the Navy in highly classified security information systems.
Throughout his many moves and deployments, Mike always stayed in touch with crewmates, friends, and family. Mike was an active member of Santa Clara alumni and helped with alumni events in San Diego. He died on March 8, 2021, and leaves behind a legacy of humor, friendship, loyalty, and integrity.
