After Michael T. Gamache ’68 graduated from Santa Clara University in 1968, he was drafted into the U.S. Army as an infantryman, serving one tour in Vietnam. He earned two Purple Hearts among other decorations. Honorably discharged, he joined his father on the hop farm in Toppenish,  Washington, where Michael would raise three children with his high school sweetheart, Clara. Under his leadership the farm expanded into grape and apple production as well. Upon retirement in 2013, Michael and Clara devoted their time to traveling the world, visiting many World Heritage sites in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America—they particularly enjoyed New Zealand and Australia. Michael died on April 1, 2021, and is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, his daughter, two sisters, and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his two sons.
