Michael James Zelensky ’77, 58, died Aug. 2, 2014, in Ketchikan. He was born Sept. 16, 1955, in Tacoma, Washington. He lived his early years in Seattle, where he attended Our Lady of Fatima School until eighth grade and graduated from Seattle Preparatory School in 1973. He graduated from Santa Clara University in 1977, and after earning his law degree from the University of Puget Sound in 1983, Mr. Zelensky came to Ketchikan that same year to clerk in the law offices of A. Fred Miller. Then, Mr. Zelensky and the late Richard Whittaker were partners in the firm of Whittaker and Zelensky for a number of years. For the past 20 years, Mr. Zelensky had a sole practice. He was a member of the Alaska Bar Association, and Ketchikan Bar Association. Mr. Zelensky sponsored and played on Ketchikan “B” League basketball teams for several years. He also enjoyed climbing mountains, first climbing Mt. Adams with his father when he was 16. In 1974, he climbed Mt. Rainier with his close friend, Gary Spees. He also hiked along the west coast of Vancouver Island with friends Bill Jandl and Graham Whyte. He climbed many of Revillagigedo Island’s peaks, including Dude, Ward, Minerva, Deer and Mahoney mountains. He enjoyed kayaking with friends around Ketchikan, and in the Hakai Passage of British Columbias. He was the master teacher of chess and backgammon for his nephews and nieces. Mr. Zelensky is survived by his wife, Myra; daughter, Alexa Ruth; mother, Rose Zelensky of Seattle; sister, Gena (David) McReynolds of Bothell, Washington; members of his wife’s family, Roland and Alaire Stanton, and Loren and Carol Stanton, all of Ketchikan, Bruce and Kathy Stanton of Washington state, and Ralph Stanton of Hawaii; nephews and nieces, Ethan and Megan McReynolds, Daniel and Jacqueline Stanton, Felice Salmon and Brooke Stanton, and Peter, Brendan and Clara Joy Stanton.
