2007

Matt Hatzke ’07, former San Jose Earthquakes soccer player, recently wrote an editorial for Outsports. "My life hasn’t been the same," he writes, since coming out to family and friends in 2013, "as I have found happiness like I couldn’t understand before. I finally felt my life finding completion…I finally felt comfortable in my own skin."

Matt was acquired by the Earthquakes in 2008 after first being drafted by the Los Angeles Galaxy in the fourth round of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft and being traded. Prior to his professional career, he was a 2006 and 2007 All-West Coast Conference selection for Santa Clara University, playing 81 games in his four years in school.

Matt now practices dentistry with his parents in San Jose and is in a happy relationship.

"While my playing days are behind me–I do venture onto the pitch for Santa Clara alumni games–I know I can still contribute to the beautiful game in other ways," he writes, hoping to be role model for other young athletes.
