Mark A. Aschheim joined the faculty in 2003 to teach courses in civil engineering. His research and teaching interests focused on earthquake engineering, seismic design, and green building materials. During his time at Santa Clara, he served as chair of the Civil Engineering Department and was a key participant in the early planning of the Sobrato Campus for Discovery and Innovation. As the Peter Canisius, S.J., Professor in Civil, Environmental, and Sustainable Engineering, Mark will be remembered as an ultimate professional with a cheery and gracious demeanor. He passed away at home on June 16, 2019, with his family by his side after a two-year struggle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Laura, daughters Eliana and Livia, and his sisters. The University has lost a true friend and colleague in Mark.
