Marie Smith ’68 was born in San Francisco on March 27, 1946, the eldest of two children. She was the daughter of Arthur Marcel Bourgois (1975) and Rose Alida Bourgois (2012). As a child, Marie spent a lot of time with her Italian grandparents, picking vegetables on the family farm in Mountain View and working at the farmers market in San Francisco. Marie was raised in San Mateo. Her Catholic faith was important to her, and she attended St. Matthew Catholic School, Mercy High School in Burlingame, and SCU. While at college, she met Frank Sweeney Tuck Jr. ’67. They married in 1966 and had two daughters, Angela and Aimee. In 1976, Marie married Russell Gordon Smith Jr. and moved to the Napa Valley, where they lived for 33 years, until his death in 2009. Marie was a homemaker, and she and Russell were avid tennis players. Marie umpired tennis professionally for many years with the United States Tennis Association. After Russell passed away, Marie moved to Huntington Beach, California, to be closer to her daughters. She enjoyed playing cards, poetry, and gardening. Everyone who met Marie, called Nonni by her family and close friends, loved her. She was a free spirit and was caring to anyone in need. Marie recently reunited with a childhood friend, Kent Hundley, and they spent the last three years together. Marie passed away on Dec. 2, 2017, and is predeceased by her husband, Russell, and her brother, Rene Marcel Bourgois (1993).
