In childhood, Maretta Ward J.D. ’94 was a busy kid—Girl Scouts, cheerleading, babysitting, track, and newspaper delivery. She attended UC Berkeley then Santa Clara Law. After two years of private practice, Maretta joined the California Department of Justice in the licensing section of the San Francisco office. She served as a Deputy Attorney General from 1998 to 2024. In 2005, Martha served as a United States representative with the Litigation Delegation to South Africa. She was a California State Bar Licensing Grader. In addition to serving as a coach and mentor to many young law school graduates seeking to pass the bar, she played an active role in her young daughter’s education. Maretta died Feb. 4, 2024.
