Lila Nielson Walters M.S. ’72  died on January 4, 2021, at Sunrise Assisted Living facility in Danville, California, where she was cared for with great attention and kindness. Lila came to Salinas in 1947 from her native Mississippi after graduating from Blue Mountain College, and initially worked as a bookkeeper for Tynan Lumber Company. Possessing a thirst for knowledge and a desire to share that knowledge, she became a mathematics teacher at Washington Junior High School and Salinas High School where she taught for many years. During that time, she achieved her master’s in teaching mathematics from Santa Clara. After retiring, she volunteered with multiple organizations including the Steinbeck House and AT&T Pro-Am golf tournament. She was also active in the Eastern Star organization.
