2008

On June 3, de Saisset Museum Assistant Director Lauren Baines ’08 premiered Something About Chairs (a seat at the table/a seat of one’s own) at San Jose’s Theatre on San Pedro Square with her company Lauren Baines Dance/Theatre. The performance featured alumnae dancers Claire Calalo ’07Julia Canavese ’08, and Jessica de Leon ’09, and utilized chairs as props to symbolize sources of power and the challenges of accessing it. In addition to movement, the piece featured spoken word elements that explored the social obstacles to being heard as well as incorporated the dancers’ personal stories and excerpts from Witold Rybczynski’s 2016 book Now I Sit Me Down: From Klismos to Plastic Chair: A Natural History.
