Associate professor of mathematics Karrolyne Fogel ’91 received the 2017 President’s Award for Teaching Excellence at the Honors Convocation at California Lutheran University on April 25. The award recognizes professors who are held in high esteem by their peers, students, and the rest of the university community. Fogel joined the Cal Lutheran faculty in 1998. The Thousand Oaks resident teaches upper division electives for math majors as well as classes for non-jors. She also educates aspiring elementary school teachers through an interdisciplinary educational studies program and serves as the director of the mathematics single subject program for those planning to become high school math teachers. She was the chair of the mathematics department for eight years. In addition to serving as an academic adviser and mentor to math majors and minors, Fogel is adept at helping undeclared and transfer students identify and transition into fields of study. Fogel’s background is in algebraic number theory and her current research is in graph labeling. She also enjoys the mathematics of voting and has mentored student projects in that topic at Cal Lutheran and introduced the subject to local elementary school students. She has served on the leadership team for the Pacific Coast Undergraduate Math Conference, which was recognized in 2015 by the American Mathematical Society as a mathematics program that makes a difference. She is a member of the governing board of the Southern California–Nevada section of the Mathematical Association of America. Fogel received her doctorate in mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin.
