Brother Justin DeChance ’81 served as a Jesuit for 71 years, embodying a life of quiet devotion, hospitality, and faith. From his earliest days in the novitiate at Los Gatos in 1953, where he humbly said he first “learned to boil water,” to decades spent nurturing communities through food service, guest ministry, and tireless support, he poured his heart into caring for others. Whether welcoming visiting Jesuits from around the world, guiding students at Jesuit High School in Carmichael, or serving in countless behind-the-scenes roles, Justin’s steady presence brought warmth, joy, and belonging to all who crossed his path. He died June 16, 2025.
