1961

John Tweten ’61 always aimed to leave places better than he found them. For over 50 years, he profoundly impacted San Jose’s education sector, from his early work as a counselor at Sonoma’s Hanna Boys Center to a 30-year career with San Jose Unified School District, where he was a school psychologist, vice principal, and founder of Broadway, a continuation school for students who struggle with traditional school environments. He later lectured at San Jose State University. John met his wife, Sylvia, while serving with the Peace Corps in Colombia. They enjoyed nearly 60 years together, raising three children and creating a cherished family. John died on Feb. 5, 2024.
