John Keith Mortenson MBA ’73 was born on Aug. 29, 1934, in Monterey to Norvin and Erna Mortenson. He was raised in Monterey and attended Monterey High School, graduating from UC Berkeley in 1957 with a B.A. in political science. At UC Berkeley, John was a member of the ROTC, crew team, and Kappa Alpha fraternity. He served in the Army as an intelligence officer from 1957 to 1963 in active duty and in the reserves. John received an MBA from SCU before becoming the personnel manager for UC Santa Cruz as it opened in 1965. John raised his three daughters, Christina, Andrea, and Alexa, in Santa Cruz and was an active member of the business community and of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Capitola. He married Nancy on May 30, 1986, and they lived in Santa Cruz until moving to Salem, Oregon, in 2005. In Salem, John was an active member of Prince of Peace Episcopal Church, the Rotary Club, and the Marion County Master Gardeners Association as well as an Eagle Scout. His lifelong passions included camping, fishing, tennis, skiing, reading, history, travel, and generously contributing his time and many talents to the communities he lived in. At 84, he died on Jan. 10, 2019, in Salem, Oregon, and is survived by his wife, Nancy Mortenson, daughters Andrea Cox and Alexa Claybon, stepson Francesco Brown, and grandchildren Allaura Cox, Christopher Cox, Hazel Claybon, and Edith Claybon.
