Born Feb. 8, 1928, in San Francisco to Patrick J. and Kathleen Desmond Power, both originally from Ireland, John Desmond Power ’48 was a true city kid. He graduated from St. Ignatius High School and received a mechanical engineering degree from SCU, where he studied under Dean George L. Sullivan. His early years at Rogers Engineering Company took him to many countries in Europe and Asia. In 1958, he married the former Mary Lou O’Connor and settled in Mill Valley. In 1966, the Power family moved to Longview, Washington, to be closer to Mary Lou’s relatives. John founded Longview Engineering and Design, from which he had yet to retire, and became a pillar of St. Rose Catholic Church and many other community organizations. At age 90, he passed away on Nov. 17, 2018, at St. John Medical Center. His wife, Mary Lou, preceded him in death in 2009. He is survived by a daughter, Monica Scott (Mark) of Seattle; two sons, Tim Power of Los Angeles and Brian Power of Seattle; a grandson, Patrick Scott of Seattle; a sister, Helen Walter of Palo Alto; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and good friends. All loved him very much and already miss him greatly.
