The San Francisco 49ers first quarterback and 1942 Bronco quarterback, Jesse Freitas ’44 died in May 2020 at the age of 99. When Jesse was the sophomore team quarterback, the team went 7-2 with wins over Utah, Stanford, California, Oregon State, and St. Mary’s. The football program was shut down for three years following his sophomore season because of WWII. It was after the war that Jesse joined the first 49er team that included former Bronco greats Alyn Beals ’43, Dick Bassi ’37, Ken Casanega ’42, Visco Grgich ’46, Eddie Forrest ’43,and Coach Buck Shaw.
