A lifelong student, Jeffrey Leigh “Painless” Peters ’61 attended Santa Clara University and completed his bachelor’s at San Jose State. He received a master’s degree in anatomy from UCLA, then another master’s in biomedical engineering and a Ph.D. in physiology from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He moved to Salt Lake City in 1970 to join the Division of Artificial Organs at the University of Utah, where he obtained his M.D. and completed a residency in anesthesiology. Jeff was active in the Civil Rights movement, working with VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) to fight poverty and start a preschool in the community of Blossom Heights, Houston. For two decades, Jeff traveled to Ghana to teach and work, training future doctors and helping in an annual, critical outreach program to small villages. Jeff loved music, pistachio ice cream, and sports, playing basketball and tennis well into his 70s. He died September 29, 2020 at the age of 80 at his home in Salt Lake City, Utah. He is survived by his wife, Linda, children, including Jared Peters ’90, numerous relatives, and an adopted family in Ghana.
