After majoring in civil engineering at Santa Clara Jay Philip Murphy ’54 served in the U.S. Army as a Private First Class topographic surveyor at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. Jay worked with his father in the family business, Murphy Pacific Co., which built several major infrastructure bridges in the western U.S., including the San Mateo-Hayward bridge in the Bay Area, the Coronado Bridge in San Diego, and the Glen Canyon Bridge in Arizona. He also worked as an engineering consultant on such projects as the eastern span replacement of the San Francisco Bay Bridge. Jay was a gifted storyteller and avid sportsman, skiing and racing hydroplanes in the Lake Tahoe area. Jay was most proud of the accomplishments of his beloved five daughters, including Eileen ’93, Emily ’94, and Edith ’95. He died on August 28, 2020 in Oakland, Calif. He was 88.
