Growing up in Eureka, Calif., James H. Smith MBA ’68 spent his time fishing, hunting, and lettering in football, basketball, and pole vaulting. He attended Humboldt State University, UC Berkeley, and then joined the Army in 1954 with his life-long best friend, Dair Magnuson. After serving, Jim received his B.S. in mechanical engineering from San Jose State University and joined General Electric in New York, where he met his wife, Nancy, at a bookstore and the two were married for 60 years. Jim enjoyed a successful career that saw time at GE, NCR, Memorex, Santa Clara University, and Hewlett-Packard in Boise, Idaho. He founded the Idaho Youth Soccer Association in 1979, and coached local club and high school teams. Additionally, he was passionate about training dogs and competing with the Idaho Retriever Club. Jim died on October 27, 2020, at the age of 88. He is survived by his wife, children, including Daniel K. Smith ’88, and grandchildren.
