From working on a cattle ranch to spending summers as a ‘gandy dancer’ on a railroad section gang, James Bowen ’55 did a lot as a young man—and his breadth of vocations only increased as he got older. After a brief stint as a professional basketball player, he joined the army as a first lieutenant. A few years later he became a teacher and coach. Later, he went on to work as an agent in the FBI during the Hoover years, then as an investigator for Shell Oil, then back to teaching. James finally settled down as a parish administrator at CCOP. Following him across states and jobs was his wife Betty. The two were active members at their church and had many friends in the parish. James died Jan. 28, 2022, and is survived by his son Daniel Bowen ’88 and daughter-in-law Linda Bowen ’86.
