J. “Phil” Smith ’57 had a successful career in engineering. As part of the U.S. Army, Corps of Engineers, he was stationed in France with the 82nd Engineer Battalion. Phil completed active duty with the rank of 1st Lieutenant, then found work with Texaco and remained active in industrial and professional committees. He was also an accomplished runner, keeping up with the sport even as he aged to become the oldest runner of the Houston Aramco Half Marathon. For many years, he held the distinguished title of completing the most consecutive Houston Marathons, with 27 marathons and 15 half marathons under his belt. Phil died Feb. 17, 2024.
