Harold “Jim” Ellis ’63, J.D. ’71 was born in 1940 in San Francisco. He grew up in the city and in Stockton, California, before attending SCU on a basketball scholarship. Upon graduation, Jim joined the Army, where he served in the 82nd Airborne Division in Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart and was medically discharged in 1967. After his time in Vietnam, Jim married and returned to SCU, where he received his law degree. Over the course of his career, he worked in the district attorney’s office in both San Francisco and Alameda counties, as well as in private practice. Jim was appointed as a San Mateo County judge in 1988, where he served for over 20 years. Jim died at home on Dec. 8, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Vickii; his two children, Terri and Kit; and one grandson. He was a lifelong Bay Area sports fan, loved to work out at the gym, and was a true gentleman who loved his family and friends.
