Gregory Macres ’79 and wife Deborah Macres tragically lost their 4-year-old son, Gregory, in 1997 to Gaucher disease, a rare genetic disorder that affects children. Despite their profound grief, the Macreses remained committed to finding a cure, establishing a foundation (www.childrensgaucher.org) to support global research efforts. After 25 years, over $3.2 million in funded research, and 38 publications in renown medical journals there is now reason for hope. Their dedication has contributed to a promising breakthrough: a new genetic treatment shown to significantly increase lifespan and preserve motor function in mice, offering renewed hope for patients. This important research has been published in the journal Gene Therapy.
