1980

Gerald “Jerry” Cavanagh, S.J. was a devoted Jesuit and college professor. He was always optimistic and had a zest for life. Before he was ordained, Jerry pursued a career in engineering and designed landing gear for aircraft. But he wanted to work with people more than things and entered the Chicago Province of the Society of Jesus in 1953. Jerry’s words and deeds expressed his cura personalis for all, through his courses and writings—including five books—in business ethics. He was one of the earliest pioneers in studying the social responsibility of business and is nationally recognized as one of the founders of the field of business ethics. He held the Dirsken Chair in Business Ethics at Santa Clara in 1979-80. Jerry died on November 10, 2022.
