Frank Carleton Mooney ’58 grew up in Oregon, the oldest of three boys born to Gertrude Meixner and Elton Mooney. He attended high school in Portland and played on the state’s championship football team as a senior. Frank was a proud alumnus of SCU, working summers at lumber mills and Hewlett-Packard to pay tuition. He met his wife Giannina Loyacon while in college, and they married at St. Dominic’s Cathedral in San Francisco on Sept. 7, 1957. After completing his military service with the Army, Frank was hired at North American Aviation (later Rockwell International). While there, he worked on missile telemetry, stage two of the Saturn V rocket, and the first GPS satellite system. Frank was detailed to work for several years at NarTrans, a subsidiary of Rockwell International created to promote minority employment. He was also a founding member of several tech companies. He and Giannina settled in Brea, and as early members of St. Angela Merici parish, they participated in many landmark events. He sent 11 children to St. Angela’s school from its founding. In retirement, Frank converted a bedroom into massive HO- and N-scale railroad tracks, complete with buildings and stations named after his family members. He was ready with a bottle of wine and hand-made pasta for special occasions. No one could compete with his present-wrapping skills. He enjoyed traveling the world with Giannina and took his children on a trip to London. Frank died after a brief illness on Dec. 18, 2019. He was 84 years old. He is survived by his children (David, Maryanne, Pamela, Paul, Adrienne, Kate, Christine, Laura, Patrick, Amber, Gavin) and his brother John. Frank is also survived by grandchildren Danielle, Richard, Rachel, Theresa, Amanda (David); Jacob Dalleska (Maryanne); Declan Conroy (Pamela); Christopher and Lauren (Paul), Matthew Karyadi (Adrienne); Jordan, Kessler and Hayden Mooney Gregonis, and Sophia Mooney McDermott (Christine); Jared, Devin and Colin (Patrick); Stella and Isaac Partner (Amber). His 11 great-grandchildren include Braden and Kellan Sticha (Danielle); Cashton, Greyson, Noah, Johnny and Maecynn Mooney (Richard); Dylan Mooney (Rachel); LilyAnn and Maddox Hamilton (Theresa); and Jackson Gregonis (Hayden).
