Francis Cyril “Cy” Smith ’48 passed away peacefully on Dec. 31, 2010, at the age of 87. Preceded in death by his wife, Peg Hobrecht Smith, he was the cherished father of Kristy (Mike) Natter ‘75 and a delightful granddad to Nick and Kurt Natter ’11. Cy will be dearly missed by his sisters Claire (Jerry) Parent and Betty (Roger) Macklin and numerous nieces and nephews. His sister Marge Jones predeceased him. Born in Maryland and raised in Burlingame, Calif., Cy graduated from Bellarmine College Prep in 1941. He entered Santa Clara University on a football scholarship, but left school to serve as a pilot in the Army Air Corps during WWII. After the war, he returned to Santa Clara and graduated in 1948. He soon joined Levi Strauss & Co., living and working in Albuquerque N.M., Dallas, Texas, and Los Angeles, where he retired after 30 years with the company. Cy’s passions were family, friends, football, and golf. He enjoyed serving on the Board of Directors of Bel-Air Country Club and was honored to be a founding member and treasurer of the ""Niners."
