Dr. Franklin Dotoli ’48, 85, of Nutley passed away on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 surrounded by his family. Born on July 1, 1924 to Angie and Ludine Dotoli, Dr. Dotoli was raised in Nutley. After graduating from Baringer High School in Newark, he went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree from Santa Clara University in 1948. He continued on with his education earning a medical degree in 1953 from Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. It was there that he met his bride, Nancy Mulready, whom he married on June 6, 1953.  Dr. Dotoli returned to New Jersey to serve an internship at St. Michael’s Hospital in Newark from 1953 to 1954 and went on to complete a surgical residency at East Orange Veteran’s Hospital in East Orange. In 1957, Dr. Dotoli was stationed at Fort Eustis, Va.

and served as a first lieutenant. After receiving an honorable discharge, he returned to his hometown of Nutley and established a medical practice, faithfully serving the local community for over 50 years. Dr. Dotoli was well known for making house calls, day or night, to the homes of his patients, long after the practice was no longer commonplace.  In ho
nor of his many years of dedication to the medical profession, Dr. Dotoli was a life member of the American Academy of Family Physicians recognizing his long term support of the organization and the specialty of family practice. In 2008, he was recognized with a Certificate of Long-term Membership from the American Academy of Family Physicians. He was also presented with the Golden Merit Award by the Medical Society of New Jersey in 2003 in recognition of 50 years of distinguished service as a practicing physician.  He loved to travel, especially to the San Francisco area, but also enjoyed trips to Europe and was one of the first American tourists to enter post-Soviet Russia.  He is predeceased by his young son, William and his daughter Elaine. Dr. Dotoli leaves his wife and constant companion for 60 years Nancy Dotoli, his children, Joan Dotoli, Frank Dotoli and his wife Deborah, Gregg Dotoli, Dean Dotoli, Peter Dotoli and his wife Kathy, and Sheila Dotoli Durante and her husband Dr. Michael Durante and nine grandchildren. His brother Gustave Dotoli and his wife Pat, sisters Vilma Tramutolo and Deborah Guarino also mourn his passing along with his numerous nephews and nieces.
