Derek Hansen ’93 thrived on adventure and challenging himself. Growing up, Derek participated in a variety of youth sports, Boy Scouts, BMX racing, and was very active in 4-H, showing various animals at the California Mid-State Fair. He was ultimately named Beef Showman of the Year in 1988. Derek continued to be an active sportsman: He completed two Los Angeles Marathons and competitively ran the 900 steps of the US Bank Building in downtown L.A. He also skied the black diamond runs and learned how to water ski barefoot. Derek and his family traveled extensively, including internationally and particularly enjoyed the ocean and the mountains. They were frequent concert attendees and faithfully followed team sports, especially the UCLA Bruins. Derek will be remembered for his warm, loving personality, his infectious smile, his integrity and his love for his family. Derek passed along the gift of life to others through organ donation.
