Cody Franks ’10 beings hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in honor of his sister, Jessie Marie Franks, who died in March 2009 from cystic fibrosis. While he hikes from San Diego to British Columbia, a 2,650 mile journey, Franks will carry his sister’s ashes with him, “so she’ll be there with me in spirit,” he said. "I promised her I’d do the hike two weeks before she died." Franks has officially dubbed his effort the "Franks Walk Memorial Charity Hike" since it is in memory of his sister and he hopes to raise money for cystic fibrosis research as well. Franks also has cystic fibrosis, but a much milder form than his sister suffered from. His journey will begin April 17, his 25th birthday, and he will be using a GPS tracking meter to allow viewers to virtually hike the trail with him. The hike begins in Campo, which is just east of San Diego at the Mexican border. He will travel the entire John Muir Trail, the Sierra Nevada, and the Cascades before ending up in Manning Provincial Park, B.C.
