After she got married and had her first and only child, Carol J. Berge M.A. ’71, J.D. ’77 went back to school. The West Valley College valedictorian and SJSU magna cum laude graduate earned her master’s degree, teaching credential, and law degree from Santa Clara University. After a long career in law, in 2003, Carol joined her son, James Berge ’81, J.D. ’86 in his estate planning law practice until her retirement in 2008. (Carol and James were recognized by Santa Clara University as the first mother and son graduates from the School of Law.) Throughout her life, Carol was a staunch women’s rights advocate. She actively supported passage of the Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and never missed voting in an election. Her only regret was not living long enough to see a woman elected as President of the United States—though she did see the first female VP. Carol died at the age of 86 on March 5, 2021.
