C. Michael Smith ’54 was primarily raised by his mother and grandfather, Charlie Graham, who owned the minor league San Francisco Seals baseball team. Mike played varsity baseball at Santa Clara before enlisting in the Army and eventually attending the University of San Francisco School of Law. He was a Bar Association lecturer and mentor to young lawyers wanting to hone their skills in trial law. In retirement, he pursued archaeology studies at Cabrillo College and Stanford, participating in excavations locally and as far away as the Swiss Alps. Mike died Sep. 17, 2023, and is survived by his wife and five children, including daughter Monica Wahler ’91.
